Anyone who knows my Dad, knows how strong he is, so this was just another stepping stone in his life. He went into the surgery with the best attitude, confident, and feeling good about it.

His words ” The Doctor’s know the problem, they know how to fix it, what should I be worried about”

So this is how I’m feeling today, after hearing the good news from Brian, Sandra, Bruce and Debbie S. and Debbie G. my rocks and informants by mom and dad’s side.
thumbs up

This is what my dad is in for tomorrow.

We love you dad,

The bolded paragraphs of the post made me relax a little bit.

What is heart bypass surgery?
Arteries carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body. But sometimes arteries become blocked. When this happens, surgeons create a new channel to bypass the blockage. Doctors call it bypass graft surgery. It uses a working blood vessel from another part of the body — the graft — to channel blood around the blocked area.

When is bypass surgery needed?
The aorta is the main artery that carries blood from the heart. Two main blood vessels branch from the base of it: the right and left coronary arteries. Each of the coronary arteries has many branches.

When plaque buildup narrows an artery to about 70% of its normal size, the artery is essentially blocked. Less severe blockage can be relieved by angioplasty and stenting. That’s when a tiny balloon is threaded into the blocked artery and slowly inflated. Then a tube called a stent is used to keep the artery open.

But severe blockage usually requires bypass surgery.

What is multiple bypass surgery?
Sometimes several arteries are blocked, and several bypasses are needed. If, for example, there were blockages in all three coronary arteries and one branch, a person would get four bypasses. This is called quadruple bypass surgery.

People who need several bypasses aren’t necessarily at higher risk than those who need just one, says UCLA professor Prediman K. Shah, MD, director of cardiology and the Atherosclerosis Research Center at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

It is not the number of bypasses that dictates a patient’s risk,” Shah tells WebMD. “The risk is more dependent on the general condition of the patient, whether the patient has other conditions, such as kidney disease or diabetes, and the condition of the heart muscle itself. So if the patient’s condition is good, the number of bypasses may mean a longer surgery but not significantly greater risk.”

How is bypass surgery done?
Doctors take a substitute blood vessel from another part of the body. It’s safe to do this because the body has other ways of getting blood to areas.

The surgeon then attaches one end of the graft to the aorta and the other end to the coronary artery below the blockage.

The traditional operation calls for a six- to eight-inch cut down the center of the breastbone so the surgeon can get directly at the heart. During the operation, the body is connected to a heart-lung bypass machine that keeps the blood flowing. The heart is stopped while the doctor operates. Then the surgeon uses special wires to close the chest.

Sometimes it’s possible for the surgeon to use minimally invasive surgical techniques. In this case, the incision is much smaller. And in some cases, the heart does not even have to be stopped. However, these techniques can’t be used for all bypass surgeries.

How risky is bypass surgery?
No underlying diseases such as diabetes, the risk of bypass surgery is small.

“In skilled hands, the surgery can be carried out with overall risk of 1% to 2% of anything untoward happening,” Shah says. “This varies according to age, how badly damaged the heart is, whether the aorta itself has plaque buildup — a number of factors. But I think driving a car every day is more dangerous.”

How long does it take to recover?
Once the bypass surgery is completed, doctors start the heart again with electric shocks and turn off the heart-lung machine.

The patient will have wires to monitor the heart pace and a tube to drain fluids leading from the chest. Sometimes a temporary pacemaker is attached to the wires and to the chest.

After surgery, the patient goes to an intensive care unit for a day or two of close monitoring. Then the patient is transferred to the nursing unit for three to five days.

Recovery from bypass surgery can be surprisingly rapid.

“With uncomplicated surgery in a person of President Clinton’s age — if his heart muscle is not damaged — you can be out of the hospital in five days,” Shah says. “If they say he has an excellent chance of full recovery, he would be an excellent candidate for fast recovery. I would say he has only a 1% to 1.5% risk of anything bad happening.”

Once a person who has had bypass surgery leaves the hospital, home recovery means progressively increasing activity over the next two to four weeks.

“Most patients are fully functional in six to eight weeks, although some people may take longer,” Shah says. “But four to six weeks of progressive recuperation at home is needed. The patient is not bed-bound but not leaving home. And there can be fatigue, heart arrhythmias, fluid buildup, depression. But most people recover fairly quickly.”

Some interesting trivia -
The police technical consultant to the show told Michael Chiklis that all police officers would love the show, even those above the rank of captain who would denounce it in public.

The Strike Team was based on the LAPD Rampart Division’s corrupt anti-gang unit.

Detective Shane Vendrell’s badge number is 714, the same as Detective Joe Friday’s on “Dragnet” (1951).

Creator Shawn Ryan’s original title of the show was “The Barn”. The FX network feared that potential audiences might be turned away by that, because they might think it was a gardening show or something similar. “Rampart” was also considered, after the controversial corruption charges against the Rampart division of the Los Angeles Police Department. This title was used in early promotional materials, including several TV spots. Upon opposition from the LAPD, as well as the fact that people not familiar with the Rampart scandal might not understand the name, the title was changed at the last minute to “The Shield”.

FX originally balked at the hiring of Walton Goggins as a regular cast member. In order to convince the network executives to hire him, the episodes “Our Gang” and “The Spread” were specifically rewritten in order to showcase Walt’s acting abilities in hopes of him being hired as a full-time cast member. These episodes convinced FX to give the go-ahead to hire him as a full-time cast member though because of the delays in finalizing his contract, the Shane character was written out of three episodes with the Vic Mackey character partnered up with fellow cast member Kenneth Johnson (”Dawg Days” and “Throwaway”) or assisting Detectives Wyms and Wagenbach on case (”Cherrypoppers”).

In the original pitch of the series to FX, the members of the Strike Team were supposed to be background characters and that the character of Vic Mackey would mainly interact with the other characters. However, after casting Walton Goggins and Kenneth Johnson as members of the Strike Team, it was decided to make the Strike Team members a regular part of the series.

The uniformed officers originally wore realistic LAPD-style badges over their left breast, which is standard in the real Los Angeles Police Department, as it is symbolically over the heart. After criticism from the real LAPD over the show’s depiction of corrupt cops, the badges were replaced with less realistic badges which were worn over the right breast, starting midway through the first season.

Shawn Ryan originally wrote Claudette’s character as a man. It took a call from CCH Pounder’s agent to make him appreciate a woman detective would offer a whole new slant to proceedings. One thing that Ryan didn’t change though was the dialog, meaning that Claudette pulls no punches with her fellow detectives and the criminals she encounters. This was at Pounder’s request.

Because of the series’ graphic content, advertisers were initially reluctant to pay to be in its schedules. The high ratings soon convinced them otherwise.

Farmington is a fictional district in Los Angeles.

The Barn is a deconsecrated church.

The average episode is filmed in seven days.

Cathy Cahlin Ryan who plays Vic Mackie’s wife is show’s creator Shawn Ryan’s real-life wife. She was pregnant throughout the filming of the first season.

The cast had to undergo police weapons and tactics training for the series.

To prepare for his role as Vic Mackey, not only did Michael Chiklis had to get in shape and special training, but he learned to speak Spanish.

There are police technical advisers on the set of every episode.

On the back of Vic’s car you can sometimes see a ManCow sticker, this is in reference to a Chicago radio show host who is good friends with Michael Chiklis. ManCow has also appeared as stand-ins for police line-ups on the show.

Vic Mackey carries a Smith and Wesson Model 4506-1 .45 ACP caliber semi-automatic pistol with adjustable 3-dot sights. The firearm can carry eight rounds in a magazine.

Vic Mackey’s TV daughter Cassidy is played by Michael Chiklas’s real-life daughter Autumn.

Maple leaf School put together some baseball teams and had a tournament on Sunday at a baseball field about 20 min. from our house. There was 2 younger teams and 1 old team (which Bill and I played on).

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon, we had a game at 1 and at 3.

The oldie but goodies - won the whole thing, the scores were close, but in the end we pulled it together and won both games.
